| Get in Gear for a New Year As we start out the new year with promising resolutions to exercise and get in shape, we also need to get in gear. There are a few basics that you will need before you head to the gym or jogging trails.
The primary tool is an appropriate pair of shoes. Proper footwear is essential. The right pair of shoes can help prevent injuries. You do not want to start out your first week with blisters, shin splints and knee pain. Make sure to look for shoes that are designed for your specific activity, and buy a pair that feels good on your feet. For a good, quality pair of fitness shoes, you will likely spend at least $60, unless you find a great sale. Good shoes are a wise investment.
You will also need appropriate apparel. The fitness industry has created some wonderful synthetic fabrics, such as Coolmax, Lycra spandex and various nylons that will keep you warm in winter and dry in summer. These fabrics help wick moisture away from your skin to help you regulate your body temperature in any climate. Plain old cotton isn’t your best choice when you plan on working up a good sweat. Your workout clothing should provide you appropriate support, comfort and self-confidence.
If you plan on indulging in your own cardiovascular equipment this year, you should do your research. Don’t fall prey to the fitness gizmos and gadgets advertised on TV. Your best bet is to get a week’s pass at a local gym to try out different types of equipment. Find what you enjoy using, and then buy the best quality you can afford. For instance, a quality treadmill will cost you at least $1000 and an elliptical trainer about $500. Do your research on the Internet and then shop a reputable fitness-equipment dealer where you can test-drive the equipment you are interested in.
To go with your cardio equipment, you might also consider strength-training tools. Your most accessible, reliable tools are free weights. Women should start with pairs of 5-, 8-, 10-, 12- pound weights; men should start with 10-, 12-, 15-, 20- pound weights. You can always add heavier weights to your collection, as you get stronger. A great workout can be done with free weights and a chair and/or bench.
Finally, if you are looking to join a health club, make sure you find one that is convenient for you to get to. If it takes you 30 minutes to get to the gym, it is less likely that you will go. Get a week pass and test out the equipment and group fitness classes, such as step, kickboxing and spinning. The right club can offer you variety, guidance and motivation.
